Jamaica area guide

Negril

Negril is Jamaica's sunset capital, stretched along Seven Mile Beach on the island's western tip. The beach runs north from the town center — wide sand, calm water, and a procession of all-inclusives — while the cliffs to the south trade sand for diving platforms and boutique hotels built into the rock. It's the most laid-back of Jamaica's resort zones, with fewer crowds than Montego Bay and less mountainous terrain than Ocho Rios. You're here for the water, the sunsets, and a slower pace.

Base here if

  • Beach people who want reliable swimming and long walks on actual sand, not rocky coves
  • Sunset chasers — this is the west coast, so you get the full show every night
  • All-inclusive fans who want variety without leaving the resort strip
  • Couples looking for adults-only properties with direct beach access
  • Divers and cliff jumpers who prefer launching off rock over wading in from shore

Look elsewhere if

  • Culture and history travelers — Negril doesn't have the colonial architecture or museums you'll find in Falmouth or Port Antonio
  • Hikers and waterfall chasers — the terrain here is flat; you're driving inland for rivers and elevation
  • Nightlife seekers looking for variety — there's beach bars and resort entertainment, but no real club scene
  • Budget backpackers — the few cheap-eats spots (Kiki's, Shelly's, Hammond's) are exceptions in a resort-priced zone
  • Families who need kid-focused resorts — many top properties here are couples-only or adults-only

The vibe

At 9am, Seven Mile Beach is calm water and open sand, with joggers and early swimmers claiming the shoreline before the heat sets in. By 9pm, the beach bars fill up and the cliffs at West End become the show — locals and travelers lined up to watch cliff divers and the sun drop straight into the Caribbean. It's social without being loud, and there's almost no hustle compared to Montego Bay.

On foot vs. with wheels

You can walk Norman Manley Boulevard from resort to resort on Seven Mile Beach, and there's enough beachfront dining (Bourbon Beach, Aunties and Allan's) that you're not stuck on-property. The cliffs at West End are a different story — properties are spaced out along West End Road, and walking between them means sharing narrow shoulders with traffic. You'll need a car or taxi for anything off the beach strip: groceries, waterfalls, or day trips to YS Falls or the Black River. Parking at resorts is easy; street parking near the cliffs is tight.

A day based here

How a Negril day actually goes.

Morning

Start at Kiki's Koffee & Kone on Norman Manley Boulevard for cheap, strong coffee and patties before the beach fills up. Walk north to Bloody Bay if you want calmer water and fewer vendor approaches, or stay central on Seven Mile Beach if you prefer the proximity to facilities. If you're based on the cliffs, ladder into the water from Rockhouse Hotel or Tensing Pen and snorkel the drop-offs.

Afternoon

Lunch at Chill Pops in The Boardwalk Shopping Village — affordable, air-conditioned, and the reviews are unanimous on quality. Spend the afternoon either walking the length of Seven Mile Beach (it's flat, shaded in spots, and you can stop at any beach bar) or book a half-day with one of the local tour operators like Rocky's Taxi or JuJu Tours to hit YS Falls or the Black River for crocs and swimming holes. If you're staying put, the Rockhouse Spa on the cliffs is the best-reviewed spa in the area.

Evening

Sunset is the main event — claim a spot on the cliffs at West End Road (Sunset Pub is literally named for this) or stay on Seven Mile Beach where the sun drops straight into the water. Dinner at Ciao Jamaica if you want Italian with a view, or Wayne's Lobster Place in Bloody Bay if you're okay with plastic chairs and perfect lobster. The Piano Bar at Sandals Negril is open to resort guests, but most evenings end at a beach bar or back at your property — nightlife here is low-key.

Good to know

  • Book one of the highly-rated local tour operators (Rocky's, Dudley's, Joe Cool, Kingsley's, Everald's) early if you're doing a day trip — they all run 5-star ratings and fill up fast during high season.
  • The northern end of Seven Mile Beach (Bloody Bay) has calmer water and thinner crowds than the central strip, but fewer dining options within walking distance.
  • If you're staying on the cliffs at West End, confirm ladder access and whether your property has a pool — some travelers underestimate how much effort cliff entry takes multiple times a day.
  • Hammond's Bakery and Shelly's Place are the real budget spots if you're trying to eat off-resort without blowing the daily budget — both max out reviews at under $10 per person.
  • Most all-inclusives here are couples-only or adults-only — double-check age policies if you're traveling with kids or a group with mixed ages.
  • Negril is a 90-minute drive from Montego Bay airport; confirm transfer timing with your driver and budget for traffic if you're landing late afternoon.
