MBJ to Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios: transfers, taxis, shuttles and prices
Every way from MBJ to Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios — how long it takes, what it costs, and which option to book.
By The One Happy Aruba Team · Updated Sep 30, 2026 · How we know
Bottom line: If you're booked at Sandals, Beaches, Couples, Excellence, Iberostar or most other all-inclusives, your transfer is already in the rate — find the resort desk in the arrivals hall and you're done. Everyone else: a licensed red-plate JUTA taxi (US$30–40) or a pre-booked private transfer (US$40–60) for Montego Bay hotels, and a pre-booked private transfer (US$100–160 per vehicle) or the Knutsford Express coach (US$25–35 per person) for the 90-minute-to-two-hour runs to Negril and Ocho Rios. There is no Uber pickup at MBJ, so don't build a plan around it.
Times and prices by resort area
Sangster International (MBJ) sits at the eastern edge of Montego Bay, which is why "how far is my hotel" ranges from ten minutes to five hours. Prices below are per vehicle for private transfers and taxis, per person for shuttles and the coach.
| Where you're staying | Drive time | Shared shuttle (per person) | Private transfer (per vehicle) | JUTA taxi | Coach |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Montego Bay hotels, Rose Hall, Ironshore | 10–30 min | US$20–25 | US$40–60 | US$30–40 | Not needed |
| Falmouth | 45–60 min | US$25–40 | Between the Montego Bay and Ocho Rios rates | Quote at the desk | Knutsford, Ocho Rios route (check current stops) |
| Runaway Bay | 75–90 min | US$25–40 | Close to the Ocho Rios rate | Quote at the desk | Knutsford, Ocho Rios route (check current stops) |
| Ocho Rios | 1h30–2h | US$25–40 | US$100–160 | Private transfer is better value | Knutsford Express US$25–35 |
| Negril | 1h30–2h | US$25–40 | US$100–160 | Private transfer is better value | Knutsford Express US$25–35 |
| South Coast / Treasure Beach | 2–2.5h | Rarely offered | Quote-based; more than Negril | No | No direct service |
| Kingston / Port Antonio | 3–5h | No | Fly into KIN instead | No | Knutsford to Kingston |
Two things the table can't show. First, the 1h30–2h figure for Ocho Rios and Negril is real: Ocho Rios is about 100 km along the North Coast Highway, which is the good road, and Negril is about 80 km on a road that is narrower and slower. Second, the shared-shuttle price looks great until you add the loop through four other resorts; on the long routes that can turn two hours into three. If you're staying in Port Antonio or Kingston, fly into Kingston (KIN) instead — from MBJ it's a three-to-five-hour drive.
Which option for which trip
Solo traveler, Montego Bay. Walk to the JUTA desk and take a licensed taxi for US$30–40, or pre-book the MBJ hotel shuttle at US$12 per person if you're not in a hurry. The airport pickup to any Montego Bay resort or Airbnb is US$20 per person with a 4.9 rating across 250-odd reviews — for one person that's cheaper than the taxi, and someone is holding a sign with your name on it.
Couple, Negril or Ocho Rios. Two shared-shuttle seats cost US$50–80 and you sit through the resort loop. A private transfer costs US$100–160 for the vehicle, goes straight to your door, and stops for jerk chicken if you ask. For two people the private car is the one you won't regret. The Negril to MBJ transfer at US$45 per person, one way or round trip, is the middle option worth pricing.
Family of four or five. Private transfer, no contest. The per-vehicle price is the same for one passenger or five, the driver waits if immigration is slow, and you can request a car seat when you book (confirm it in writing; not every operator has them). Amity Tours and Transfer at US$50 per person for a 1.5-hour run carries a perfect rating on 359 reviews.
Group of six or more. You need a van. The taxi-and-tour operators — Rocky's, Joe Cool, Major 1, Ultimate Excursions — all hold five-star ratings on 700-plus reviews each, and their US$100-per-person day tours are run by the same drivers you'd hire for a transfer. Message them with your flight number and head count, and get the vehicle price in writing.
Late arrival. JUTA taxis run all night. Knutsford's schedule does not; if your flight lands after the last coach, you're paying for a private car whether you planned to or not, so check the timetable before you pick the cheap option. Book a private transfer for any landing after 8 p.m. to Negril or Ocho Rios and let the driver track your flight.
Budget traveler heading east or west. The Knutsford Express is the answer. It's a proper coach with air-conditioning and luggage space, US$25–35 from the airport to Ocho Rios or Negril, and community regulars recommend it for hops between the tourist hubs. Route taxis and local minibuses are cheaper still but need route knowledge and often don't reach your final door; travelers who use them tend to combine a coach leg with a short taxi at the end.
How to book and what happens when you land
Before you fly. File the free C5 immigration and customs form at enterjamaica.com (one per family, up to 30 days out) and screenshot the confirmation QR; details on the getting there page. Book a private transfer 48 hours ahead with your flight number, hotel name and mobile; you'll get a WhatsApp from the driver on the day. Shared shuttles and the Knutsford coach can be booked online too.
Club Mobay. The paid fast-track lounge (US$30–70; the priority-entry package is US$39) gets you through immigration on arrival and through security on departure, plus a lounge with drinks. The honest take from regulars: it's worth it on departure day, when the MBJ security line can be long, and unnecessary on arrival if you already have a private transfer waiting — you'll be through in 30–45 minutes either way unless three U.S. flights landed at once.
Baggage and customs. Grab your bags, hand over nothing (the C5 already covers customs), walk out. One traveler noted bags being lined up on the floor rather than a belt on a busy day; don't panic, look around.
The arrivals hall. This is where it gets loud. Resort reps hold branded signs; JUTA has an official desk; tour desks line the wall. Anyone who approaches you unasked offering a "taxi" or "special rate" is not your ride. Licensed taxis have red plates. If you booked a private transfer, your name is on a sign — find it before you engage with anyone else.
SIM and cash. Digicel and Flow have counters in arrivals. There's a bank ATM (NCB and Scotiabank both operate on the island) dispensing U.S. and Jamaican dollars; pull US$100–200 in small bills for tips, jerk stands and route taxis. Resorts, tours and taxis all quote in USD, but your change comes back in JMD (roughly 155–160 to the dollar).
Tip the driver. US$5–10 per trip for a transfer driver; a few dollars more if they loaded five suitcases and stopped for patties.
What travelers report
Community posts about arrival are more about the mood than logistics: a lot of people describe their first act as a deep breath outside the terminal, a beach patty, or going straight to Seven Mile Beach for jerk chicken. On the transport side, the repeated advice is: take Knutsford between hubs, treat route taxis as a local skill you learn on trip two, and combine options since public transport rarely gets you to the resort gate. Travelers who booked a named tour operator for the airport run describe it as safe and painless, and several say they kept the same driver for the rest of the week. The one recurring regret is choosing the shared shuttle for a 6 p.m. landing in Negril and watching the sunset from a van.
FAQs
Is there Uber at Montego Bay airport?
No. Uber operates in parts of Jamaica but cannot pick up at MBJ. Use the JUTA desk, a pre-booked transfer or the Knutsford coach.
How long does it really take to get to Negril?
Plan on 1h30–2h for a private car, longer for a shared shuttle with stops. It's about 80 km, but the road west of Montego Bay is slower than the North Coast Highway.
Do I need to book a transfer if I'm at an all-inclusive?
Usually not. Sandals, Beaches, Couples, Excellence, Iberostar and most all-inclusives include round-trip transfers; confirm on your reservation and look for the resort desk in arrivals.
Is Club Mobay worth it?
On departure, yes if you hate lines. On arrival, only if you don't already have someone waiting and want the lounge. It's US$39 for the priority-entry package.
Can I take the Knutsford Express with a lot of luggage?
Yes, it's a full-size coach with a luggage hold. Confirm the timetable against your landing time, and remember it drops you at the Negril or Ocho Rios depot, not your hotel — budget a short taxi for the last leg.
Should I rent a car at the airport?
Almost never on arrival day. Jamaica drives on the left, roads are narrow and aggressively driven, and most visitors do fine with transfers, red-plate taxis and the coach. Our getting around guide covers when a rental makes sense.
