The Best Day Trips in Jamaica: Blue Mountains, Kingston, Appleton, Pelican Bar and More
Ten day trips worth a resort day in Jamaica — who each one suits, how long it takes from Montego Bay, Negril or Ocho Rios, how to do it, and what the tours cost.
By The One Happy Aruba Team · Updated Sep 30, 2026 · How we know
Most people should spend three resort days on the road: one at the waterfalls (Dunn's River or Blue Hole, easiest from Ocho Rios), one on the South Coast loop (YS Falls, Black River, Pelican Bar, easiest from Negril), and one evening at the Luminous Lagoon (easiest from Montego Bay or Falmouth). Everything else on this list is for people with a second week, a specific obsession, or a base in Kingston or Port Antonio. Book a private driver rather than a bus for anything over four hours; the price per person is often the same and you set the clock.
The ten trips at a glance
Hours are door to door from the base named. Prices are per person; where we give a median, it is across all the tour products we track for that trip.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dunn's River and Blue Hole | Ocho Rios | 4 to 8 | First-timers, families | $75 to $159 |

Dunn's River Falls and Blue Hole
The famous one and the better one, twenty minutes apart on the outskirts of Ocho Rios. Dunn's River is the 600-foot human-chain climb, crowded by 10 a.m. on cruise days; Blue Hole is deep pools, rope swings and ledges with a local guide, and it thins out after 2 p.m. From Ochi it is a half-day; from Montego Bay a seven-hour day; from Negril a slog. Private-driver operators such as Rocky's Taxi and Tour Services, Dudley's Big Ship Taxi and Tours and Joe Cool Taxi & Tours all run $100 for six hours with perfect 5.0 ratings across more than 1,300 reviews each, and will combine the two. The short Dunn's River-only version from Real Tours Jamaica is $75 for four hours. Full detail on our Dunn's River and Blue Hole pages.
Luminous Lagoon
The cheapest genuine wonder on the island. After dark, a boat takes you out onto a brackish lagoon near Falmouth where the water glows blue-green when anything moves through it; swim in it and your arms trail light. The basic Glistening Waters Luminous Lagoon Tour is $30 for ninety minutes and is the single most-reviewed activity we track (2,541 reviews, rated 4.0). The rating is held down by the fact that on bright-moon nights the glow is faint, so book on a dark moon if you can. From Montego Bay with transport, the Falmouth Mystic night tour is $90; from Ocho Rios or Runaway Bay, the dark night tour is $75 for three hours. It is an evening, not a day, so it stacks on top of anything else. See Luminous Lagoon.
The South Coast loop: YS Falls, Black River, Pelican Bar
The best full day on the island for anyone on a second trip. A morning boat safari through the Black River mangroves looking for crocodiles (go early, they sun on the banks before the heat sends them under), a swim and rope-swing session at YS Falls, then a boat a mile offshore to the Pelican Bar, a shack on stilts where you drink Red Stripe standing in the sea. Three-stop tours run $130 to $180 per person and six to eight hours from Negril; add an hour each way from Montego Bay. Bring cash, because nothing out here takes cards reliably, and avoid Saturdays when locals fill YS. Our Black River safari and YS Falls page has the shorter variants.
Appleton Estate
Jamaica's most famous rum distillery sits in the Nassau Valley inland from the South Coast, and the tour is a walk through the sugar-cane history, the copper-pot stills and a tasting at the end. Most people fold it into the South Coast loop rather than doing it alone: the Appleton Estate, YS Falls and Black River tour from Montego Bay or Negril is $159 for seven and a half hours, rated 4.6 across 115 reviews. The 24 Appleton and South Coast products we track run $75 to $500 with a median of $142 and a six-hour day. The tasting is at the very end, so eat properly at breakfast. More on the food and rum tours page.
Rick's Cafe and the Negril cliffs
If you are staying in Negril, this is not a day trip; it is your evening. From Montego Bay it is a full day built around a sunset, and the operators pad the drive with something to do on the way. The best-rated versions pair it with an ATV ride: Montego Bay: ATV, Rafting & Rick's Cafe is $70 for five hours at 4.9 across 143 reviews, ATV Jungle Ride, Zipline and Rick's Cafe is $65 for four and a half hours at 4.8, and ATV Riding, Bamboo Rafting, Lunch and Rick's is $80 for seven hours at 4.9. Skip the catamaran versions: the full-day catamaran to the reef, Rick's and Negril beach and the Negril catamaran and Rick's trip both rate below 4.0 across several hundred reviews, and one community answer specifically warned that the boat timing does not suit anyone on a tight schedule. Cliff jumping is optional and the crowd is real. See Rick's Cafe and the cliffs.
Nine Mile
Bob Marley's birthplace and mausoleum sit high in the St. Ann hills, an hour inland from Runaway Bay or Ocho Rios on a road that winds and narrows as it climbs. The site itself is small and you will be done in under an hour: the wooden house, the rock pillow where he rested, the mausoleum painted in Rasta colors, and guides who grew up on the stories. The value is in the drive and the setting. Nine Mile-only tours from the north coast run $70 to $150 and four to six hours; the Bob Marley Nine Mile Tour from Montego Bay is $150 for six hours at 4.5 across 370 reviews. Book mornings, bring cash for the guides, and if you get carsick, sit in front. From Negril it is three to four hours round trip, at which point a Kingston museum day is the better use of the hours. See Bob Marley and Nine Mile.
Kingston and the Bob Marley Museum
The capital is a different trip: the Bob Marley Museum at 56 Hope Road with the studio, the bedroom and the bullet holes from the 1976 attempt on his life, Devon House for patties and ice cream, maybe a loop through Trench Town. It is about two hours each way over the mountain from Ocho Rios, and organized versions run around $270 per person from Ochi, which is steep; the 21 Kingston products we track have a median of $120 across a shorter four-hour format for people already in the city. The museum closes Sundays and some public holidays, so check before you commit a day. Community visitors describe the museum as genuinely moving. If music is why you came to Jamaica, spend a night in Kingston rather than day-tripping it.
Blue Mountains coffee
The Blue Mountains rise behind Kingston, and the coffee farms sit on the cool, misty slopes above the city, with a sunrise hike to Blue Mountain Peak for the committed. The seven products we track run $45 to $150 with a median of $100 and roughly five hours, nearly all from Kingston. From the north coast resorts it is a very long day, and we would not do it from Negril or Montego Bay at all. Our grounding on the specific operators is thin here, so treat this as a Kingston-based trip and ask your hotel which farm tours are currently running. See Blue Mountains coffee.
Port Antonio and the Blue Lagoon
Portland parish in the far northeast is the lush, slow, rainy Jamaica of the old films, and it is not a day trip from anywhere west of Ocho Rios; it is an overnight. The Blue Lagoon is $10 per person for two hours on a boat or raft over the deep turquoise cove, rated 4.2 across 878 reviews. Reach Falls further east is $20 with a guide for the jungle pools and the cave, rated 4.7 across 795 reviews. Add Frenchman's Cove and Boston Bay jerk and you have the best two days on the island for people who do not need a resort. See Port Antonio.
Martha Brae rafting and the ATV parks
Closer to home for Montego Bay and Falmouth guests: a bamboo raft with a pole captain drifting down the Martha Brae, or the ATV and zipline parks in the hills behind the coast. These are half-days that pair well with a beach afternoon, and the combo tours listed under Rick's Cafe above include the rafting. A private version, Bamboo Rafting and Rick's Cafe Negril Private Tour, is $146 for eight hours. See rafting on the Martha Brae and ATV and horseback adventures.
Private driver vs group tour: the rule of thumb
The private-driver operators in our data cluster at $100 per person for a six-hour day (Rocky's, Dudley's, Joe Cool, Finesse Vacations, Johnson's Tours, Damion Jamaica Tours, Kenroy's), $75 for a four-hour half day (Easy Breezy Tours), and $150 for a full eight-hour day (Liberty Tours Jamaica, Travel With Mich). Nearly all hold a 5.0 rating, and the prices usually drop per person as your group grows because you are paying for the car. Scheduled group tours run the same $65 to $160 per person but on a fixed clock with a van full of strangers and a stop at every resort gate.
So: two people doing a single short trip, take the scheduled tour. Three or more people, or any trip over four hours, or any trip where arrival time matters (every waterfall, every crocodile safari), book the driver. The community pattern is striking on this point; the happiest threads are from people who found one driver they trusted and used the same person for years. Vet them, agree the price and the stops up front, and tip in cash. For the transfer side of the same question, see getting around, and if you want the site to sequence your days for you, run the trip planner.
