Jamaica Cruise Ports: Falmouth, Ocho Rios and Montego Bay — On Your Own or Ship Excursion?
What each Jamaican cruise port is like, how far Dunn's River and the beaches are from each pier, when a ship excursion is worth the markup, and the independent tours that fit a port day.
By The One Happy Aruba Team · Updated Sep 30, 2026 · How we know
Book independently at Ocho Rios and Falmouth for the big sights. Dunn's River is ten minutes from the Ochi pier and under an hour from Falmouth, the independent operators charge $75 to $150 for the same day the ship sells for more, and the best of them hold perfect ratings across hundreds of reviews. Use the ship's excursion only when the trip is far (Kingston, the South Coast, Negril from Falmouth) or your port window is short enough that a traffic jam would strand you. At Montego Bay, the honest answer is that the best day is a beach day at Doctor's Cave, and you do not need a tour for that at all.
The three ports at a glance
Distances are from the pier by taxi in normal traffic; on a day when three ships are in, add a third.
| Port | Walkable town? | Minutes to Dunn's River | Nearest swimmable beach | Typical independent tour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ocho Rios | Yes, taxi row and shops at the gate | 10 | Turtle Beach, a few minutes' walk | $75 to $139 |
| Falmouth | Gated terminal, small historic town outside | 45 to 60 | Burwood Beach, short taxi; Blue Waters day pass | $50 to $157 |
| Montego Bay | No, the Freeport pier needs a taxi | 90 or more | Doctor's Cave, 10-minute taxi | $55 to $100 |
Ocho Rios: the easy port
Ocho Rios is the port built for the port day. You walk off the ship, through a small gated shopping area, and onto a street where the licensed taxi drivers wait. Dunn's River Falls is ten minutes west; Mystic Mountain, with its bobsled and chairlift, is on the way; Blue Hole is twenty to thirty minutes inland; the public beach is a few minutes' walk from the gate. Every one of those fits inside a standard eight-hour call with room to spare.
The trade-off is the crowd you brought with you. On ship days (usually Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) Dunn's River is a queue by 10 a.m. The whole cruise-ship population arrives together, and the ship excursions arrive first. Independent visitors have two ways round this: leave the ship the minute the gangway opens and go straight to the falls before the buses, or do Blue Hole first and hit Dunn's River after 1 p.m. when the excursion groups are heading back to the pier for lunch.
Independent options that fit the window, with real ratings:
- Real Tours Jamaica: the tight Dunn's River run, $75 for four hours, rated 4.9 across 627 reviews.
- Travel Jamaica Tours: private driver based in Ocho Rios, $100 for six hours, a perfect 5.0 across 617 reviews, and they will build a Dunn's River plus Blue Hole day around your all-aboard.
- Triple Action Pack Combo: Blue Hole, horseback riding and river tubing in five hours for $157, rated 4.8 across 769 reviews. Tight for a short call.
- ATV Safari and Horseback Ride 'n' Swim: $139 for three hours, rated 4.1, the weakest of the group.
- Cruise Shore Excursions Jamaica: an operator that exists specifically for this, $100 for five hours, rated 4.6 across 325 reviews.
Skip the boat versions of Dunn's River from this pier. The Dunn's River Party Cruise with Snorkeling is $133 for four hours and rated 4.2 across more than a thousand reviews, well below the land tours, because the timing serves the boat rather than the falls. If you only want the beach, walk to Turtle Beach; it is calm and shallow, though busy with jet skis and glass-bottom boats and rated 4.1 for exactly that reason. Our Dunn's River Falls page has the climb itself in detail, including the $25 entry fee that many tour prices leave out.
Falmouth: the gated terminal
Falmouth's terminal is the newest and the most sealed off. Inside the gates it is shops, a straw market and the taxi dispatch; outside is a small Georgian town that is worth a half-hour wander and not much more. The pier's real value is that it sits between the two big attraction zones. Dunn's River and Ocho Rios are 45 minutes to an hour east; the Martha Brae river, the Good Hope estate and the Luminous Lagoon are minutes away; Montego Bay is 30 to 40 minutes west.
For a port day, the close stuff is better than the far stuff. Chukka River Outpost at Good Hope is the anchor: four hours for $100, rated 4.5 across 2,360 reviews, with river tubing, ziplines and the old plantation grounds a short drive from the pier. River Rapids Jamaica is the smaller tubing operator, $75 for three hours at 4.7. Jungle River Tubing and Beach Adventure is $89 for three hours at 4.8 across 402 reviews, and it includes the ride. For rafting proper, see our Martha Brae page.
The beach question at Falmouth is awkward. The public Falmouth Beach near the port is calm and fine for wading but it is not a resort beach, and Burwood Beach just east is a local, unlifeguarded strand rated 4.1. The fix most cruisers use is a day pass: Blue Waters Beach Club is $50 for a four-hour wristband covering beach, pool, lunch and an open bar, rated 4.0 across 361 reviews. It is not spectacular. It is convenient.
Dunn's River from Falmouth is doable but it is the one trip from this pier where the ship excursion earns its markup. The drive is 45 to 60 minutes each way in normal traffic and considerably more when several ships are in and the coast road jams at Ocho Rios. If you go independent, use a private driver such as Uton's Private Tours or Luxurious Carib Tours and Taxi Service ($75 for four hours, 5.0 across 727 reviews), agree a hard return time, and skip anything that adds a third stop. The Luminous Lagoon is a night attraction, so it only works if your ship stays late; the Glistening Waters tour is $30 for ninety minutes.
Montego Bay: Doctor's Cave and the Hip Strip
Montego Bay's cruise pier is at Freeport, on a spit of reclaimed land west of the town, and there is nothing to walk to. Everything needs a taxi. The good news is that the best thing to do here is close: Doctor's Cave Beach, ten minutes away on the Hip Strip, is calm, clear, lifeguarded and rated 4.2 across 2,423 reviews. There is a small entry fee, chairs and umbrellas to rent, and a bar. Cornwall Beach next door is the quieter fallback. Sit, swim, eat jerk on the strip, go back to the ship. It is a good day.
Beyond the beach, the choices are Rose Hall Great House east of town, the Hip Strip itself, and the hills behind the city. The best-rated short tour we track from this port is the Private Authentic Down-to-Earth Half Day Tour in Montego Bay: three hours for $55, rated 4.9 across 520 reviews, a local driver showing you the town rather than a bus. For something more active, the Rastafari Cultural ATV Community Experience is $165 for three hours and rated 4.9 across 911 reviews. Private drivers based in the city, such as PPP Tran Tours ($100, four hours, 5.0 across 680 reviews) and RGS Travel and Tours ($75, three hours, 5.0 across 284 reviews), will build a half day to your ship's clock.
Dunn's River from Montego Bay is the trip to think hardest about. It is ninety minutes each way on a good day, which turns a seven-hour port call into a bus ride with a waterfall in the middle. If your ship is in for ten hours or more, an independent operator like Grand Jamaica and Dunn's River Falls Tour ($150, seven hours, rated 4.4) can do it. If it is a standard call, do the beach, or book the ship's excursion and let them own the risk.
Ship excursion vs independent: the math
The ship's version of a Dunn's River day typically costs well above the $75 to $100 the independents charge, and the same is true of nearly every trip in the tables above. What you get for the markup is a guarantee: if the excursion bus is late, the ship waits. If your independent driver is late, it does not.
So the rule is about the buffer, not the price. Independent is the better buy whenever the round trip plus the activity fits inside your port window with at least ninety minutes to spare at the end. From Ocho Rios that covers everything within thirty minutes of the pier, which is everything worth doing. From Falmouth it covers the Martha Brae, Good Hope and the beach clubs, and Dunn's River only with a private driver and a hard return time. From Montego Bay it covers the beach and the town and not much else. For anything further, Negril, the South Coast, Kingston, book the ship or skip it.
A pattern from the community threads is worth passing on: the people happiest with their port days had booked a private driver rather than a scheduled van, and several described operators who went out of their way, including one who stayed with a passenger who could not manage a hike while the rest of the group went on. That is what you are buying with the private-driver premium.
Taxis at the pier and cash
At all three piers, the taxis waiting at the gate are licensed (red plates, JUTA or JCAL markings) and the dispatch will quote a fixed rate per person or per car to the main attractions. Confirm the price and the return time before you get in, and pay at the end. Do not accept a ride from anyone who approaches you inside the terminal offering a "special" price. If you have pre-booked, your driver will be outside the gate with a sign; the pier does not let them in.
Bring US dollars in small bills. Falls guides at Dunn's River work for tips ($5 to $10 per person), Blue Hole guides the same, taxi tips are expected, and the craft markets and jerk stands at every stop are cash only. Bring a dry bag, water shoes and your swimsuit under your clothes, because changing rooms at the falls are swamped by mid-morning. And take the all-aboard time in the ship's clock, not local time, and write it on your hand. Our things to do hub and activities browse page have every listing above with current pricing.
