Montego Bay Airport (MBJ) Guide: Club Mobay, Immigration Lines and the Arrivals Hall

How Sangster International actually works — arrival lines, whether Club Mobay's fast-track is worth it, the departure-lounge side, and how to get to your resort without the hustle.

By The One Happy Aruba Team · Updated Sep 30, 2026 · How we know

Club Mobay is worth the $39 on departure almost every time: it gets you a private check-in line, expedited security and a proper lounge with an open bar for the two hours you would otherwise spend in a plastic chair. On arrival it is worth it only if you land in the early-afternoon bank when four or five flights from the US hit immigration at once; if you land early, late, or with a private transfer already booked, most experienced visitors say to skip it and walk straight to your driver. Everything else at Sangster is simple as long as you have a ride arranged before you land.

Club Mobay's rating, 4.5 across 11,744 reviews, is the biggest review pool of any product we track in Jamaica, and the bundle with transfers rates lower (4.3 across 235) mostly because the shared van adds waiting to something you bought to avoid waiting. Buy the lounge and the transfer separately.

Arrivals, step by step

Before you fly. Jamaica's C5 customs and immigration declaration is completed online before travel rather than on a paper card handed out in the cabin. Do it the day before, screenshot the confirmation, and have your resort's name and address ready, because the form asks and so does the immigration officer.

Immigration. Off the jet bridge you walk a long corridor to the hall. This is the only place at MBJ where you can lose real time. Sangster handles the bulk of Jamaica's tourist arrivals and the US flights bunch up between roughly noon and 4 p.m., so a plane that lands at 1:30 p.m. on a Saturday in February can find four wide-bodies ahead of it. Early-morning and evening arrivals usually walk through in fifteen minutes. If you have bought Club Mobay for arrival, a host meets you at the top of the corridor with a sign and takes you to a separate line, then through to the lounge while your bags come up.

Baggage and customs. Bags at MBJ are generally on the belt by the time you clear immigration on a normal day. Customs is a quick walk past an officer who may ask what you are bringing in; the answer for nearly everyone is nothing to declare.

The exit. This is where the airport turns into a marketplace. Past customs is a hall of transport counters for the tour desks, the resort shuttles and the taxi cooperative, and beyond the doors a crowd of drivers with signs and a smaller crowd of freelancers offering rides. The airport taxi stand is legal but unmetered, so you will be negotiating. If you pre-booked, look for your name; the reputable operators track your flight and are there even when you are late. If you did not, the resort shuttle desks for the big all-inclusives are the safest fallback.

The departure side

MBJ departures are the reverse trip with one extra pain point: check-in and security both get long in the late-morning bank when the US-bound flights leave together. Airlines tell you to arrive three hours before an international departure and at Sangster in high season that is not padding. Add the transfer time from your resort, which means a Negril checkout at 8 a.m. for a 1 p.m. flight.

This is where the $39 for Club Mobay earns it. The departure package gives you a dedicated check-in counter, a fast lane through security and immigration, and the lounge itself, which sits airside with an open bar, hot food, showers and Wi-Fi. Two hours in there with a rum punch beats two hours at a gate with no seats. The duty-free hall past security is large by Caribbean standards and is the right place to buy Appleton or Blue Mountain coffee at a fair price; it is also the last place that will sell you a patty before boarding.

The community consensus on this is consistent: skip it on arrival if you have a private transfer waiting, buy it on departure. One repeat visitor put it as "go straight to your accommodation" for arrivals, and several others simply answered yes when asked whether it was worth it. We agree with both, in that order.

Leaving the airport, by area

The drive from Sangster splits three ways: fifteen minutes into Montego Bay proper, an hour east to Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay, or ninety minutes west to Negril. Shared shuttles leave when they fill and stop at every resort on the route, turning a one-hour drive into ninety minutes or more; private transfers go straight to your door.

  • Montego Bay and the Hip Strip: 15 to 30 minutes. Shared shuttle $12, private from $20 per person. Shared is fine here; the loops are short.
  • Rose Hall and Falmouth: 30 to 60 minutes. Private from $36 per person; the shared van is the one that stops at every gate along the strip.
  • Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay: 60 to 90 minutes. Private transfers $43 to $150 per vehicle depending on operator and size, and the private drivers in our data, such as Amity Tours and Transfer ($50, 5.0 across 359 reviews), will do this run.
  • Negril: 90 minutes in good traffic, $45 per person on the scheduled transfer or $43 to $150 per vehicle private. Book private if you land after 9 p.m.; shared shuttles thin out at night and do not do off-route drops.
  • South Coast and Port Antonio: two to four hours. Private only, and confirm the operator covers the distance.

Reliable owner-operated drivers who also run day tours are a good way to do the transfer, because you meet the person you might hire later in the week. Joe Cool Taxi & Tours, Major 1 Tours, Ultimate Excursions, Jackie's Real Jamaican Transfers and Finesse Vacations all hold 5.0 ratings across hundreds of reviews each. Our airport transfers page compares the operators in detail, and getting around covers whether to rent a car at all (short answer for most visitors: no).

If you are flying into Norman Manley in Kingston instead, it is a separate airport on the south coast with a three-hour-plus cross-island drive to the north coast resorts; see getting there before you book that fare because it is cheap for a reason.

Mistakes to avoid

Landing without a ride. The arrivals hall is the one place in Jamaica where an unplanned tourist is a target for hustle. Pre-booking a transfer locks the rate and skips the negotiation entirely.

Buying Club Mobay for arrival on an off-peak flight. A 7 a.m. landing in October does not need fast-track. Save the $39 for the departure.

Booking the lounge-plus-shuttle bundle when you are going to Negril or Ocho Rios. The shared van in that package is built for Montego Bay hotels. For the longer runs, buy the lounge alone and a private transfer separately.

Cutting the departure buffer. A Negril resort is 90 minutes away on a good day and the coast road has one lane each way. Leave three and a half hours before the flight, four in February and March.

Changing money at the airport. Rates are poor and US dollars work everywhere on the tourist coast. Bring small bills for tips, including a few dollars for the driver who loads your bags.

Forgetting the C5. Doing it at the immigration desk on your phone with no signal is the slowest possible start to a holiday.

If you are still choosing a base and the transfer length is part of the decision, the resort areas hub lists every area with its drive from MBJ, and the trip planner will factor your transfer tolerance into its picks.
