Bahia Principe Explore Jamaica is an all-inclusive 3.5-star resort in Runaway Bay with 500 rooms rated 3.7/5 by 15,740 TripAdvisor reviewers; typical rates from about $280 a night; direct beach access.

About

Bahia Principe Explore Jamaica is an all-inclusive in Runaway Bay that attracts families and groups looking for a full-service option without boutique pricing. The property's cleanliness rating leads its subcategories at 4.1, and rooms and sleep quality both hold at 4.0 — solid marks given the scale and volume here. With nearly 16,000 reviews, the 3.7 overall reflects what you'd expect: consistent operations, decent execution, and the occasional service lag that comes with size. The resort offers multiple pools, restaurants, and bars spread across the grounds, plus direct beach access. It's geared toward keeping guests on-property, and most do. Location scores well, partly because Runaway Bay sits between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, making day trips in either direction manageable if you rent a car. Value is rated at 3.8, which tracks for a mid-tier all-inclusive — you're paying for ease and predictability, not cutting-edge design or personalized service.

Recent Pulse

What travelers are saying.

Steady

Low confidence

Travelers say Bahia Principe Explore Jamaica delivers solid mid-tier all-inclusive value with standout kids' club staff, decent food variety at select venues, and sprawling grounds that require considerable walking. Service quality swings wildly—some staff go above and beyond while others are dismissive or undertrained. Rooms show age and inconsistency: mold, leaks, and broken fixtures appear frequently, though premium upgrades fare better. The main Nyam buffet runs hot with no AC and long waits during peak times. Beaches are small and rocky but snorkeling on the Luxury side draws praise. Expect functional rather than luxurious, and brace for closures, overbooking, and uneven execution across departments.

Standing out

Kids' club staff (Nyoka/JoJo, Brit, DeeDee, Shanique) deliver high-energy care with WhatsApp photo updates and daily activities like ice cream parties and movie nights
8 mentions
“JoJo sent pictures via WhatsApp all day so we could relax knowing our kids were safe and happy”
Snorkeling at Luxury-side beach reveals abundant marine life—octopuses, turtles, pufferfish, and tropical fish in clear shallow water
6 mentions
“Saw octopuses and Caribbean lobsters while snorkeling, worth the day pass upgrade to Luxury beach”
À la carte restaurants (Knife steakhouse, Jazim, Pisces with Mr. Flowers, Mikado hibachi) serve flavorful meals with attentive staff when you secure a booking
12 mentions
“Knife steakhouse staff were top quality, beef brisket and presentation excellent”
Concierge Karen Edwards and guest service reps Travis Henry, Amir, and Candace resolve AC failures, room swaps, and reservations with urgency and warmth
7 mentions
“Amir changed our room same day and checked in later to make sure everything worked”

Watch-outs

Main Nyam buffet lacks AC, runs 90°F+ inside, serves lukewarm/salty food, and imposes 20–40 minute waits at breakfast and dinner when resort is busy
22 mentions
“Nyam buffet so hot my five-year-old nearly passed out, portable fans just blow more hot air”
Rooms show mold in bathrooms and AC vents, leaking showers, broken door locks, stained linens, roaches, and inconsistent housekeeping that misses towels and toilet paper
31 mentions
“Called four times over two hours for towels, mold in bathroom upset my asthmatic mother's breathing”
Staff attitude is hit-or-miss—some friendly, many appear disengaged or rude, with front desk slow at check-in and dismissive when guests report safety or maintenance issues
26 mentions
“Front desk laughed when I asked about noise levels, no concern when my foot infection needed urgent care”
Advertised facilities (Ska nightclub, water sports, Round Island, Jerk Hut) closed without advance notice, à la carte bookings capped at one or two despite seven-night entitlement
14 mentions
“Nightclub closed for renovation, told us after arrival, couldn't book more than one restaurant in two weeks”

Tips from travelers

Request premium or newly refurbished rooms in advance and verify AC function on arrival to avoid mold and broken fixtures
Book à la carte restaurants within hours of check-in—slots fill fast and the app often shows incorrect availability
Bring water shoes for the rocky beach and your own snorkel gear to explore the Luxury-side reef
Arrive at Nyam buffet before 7:30am or after 9am to skip 20+ minute waits and depleted food stations

Maybe skip if: Travelers with severe food allergies, mobility challenges (many stairs, long distances), or high heat sensitivity should skip—no AC in common areas, no allergy protocols, and minimal accessible infrastructure.

Jewel Paradise Cove Beach Resort & Spa

Jewel Paradise Cove sits on a small stretch of direct beachfront in Runaway Bay, and it keeps things simple: adults-only, all-inclusive, just 100 rooms. The 4.6/5 service and cleanliness subratings track with the kind of place that doesn't try to be everything to everyone—staff know who you are by day two. Rooms rate 4.3, sleep quality nudges up to 4.4, and value holds at 4.4, which is fair for the mid-$400s per night in this part of the north coast. The resort leans into quiet and wellness more than party—think spa treatments and calm poolside afternoons rather than foam cannons. It's a solid pick if you want proximity to Dunn's River or Ocho Rios day trips without staying in the thick of it. Like most north coast properties, sargassum can drift through May to October, though staff generally clear it fast. Walkability off-property is minimal, but that's Runaway Bay in general—you're here to stay put or arrange excursions.

Bahia Principe Escape Runaway Bay

Bahia Principe Escape sits on Salt Coppers beach in Runaway Bay, on the quieter stretch of Jamaica's north coast between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. It's a mid-sized all-inclusive with 100 rooms and direct beach access. The 4.4 cleanliness rating stands out among the subratings, and the 4.2 for rooms and location suggest the property delivers on the basics without much fuss. This is a family resort, though the party score is low — expect calm over choreographed games. The north-facing Caribbean side means you'll see moderate sargassum from May to October, but the resort maintains the beach. The value score sits at 3.9, which makes sense at around $400 per night; you're paying for the convenience of all-inclusive and beachfront without premium amenities like a swim-up bar or kids' club. Walkability is limited — you're on-site or you're arranging transport. If you want a contained stay with reliable service and not much hassle, this works.

Franklyn D Resort & Spa

Franklyn D Resort & Spa sits on Runaway Bay's quieter stretch of north coast beach, and it's built around an unusual setup: every room is a suite with a dedicated vacation nanny included in the rate. That's the whole concept, and families with young kids either love it or find it odd. The 4.7 service rating isn't surprising given the staffing model, and the 4.4 value score makes sense when you factor in what you'd pay separately for childcare elsewhere. The all-inclusive covers meals and beach access, though the property shows its age in the room finishes—reflected in the 4.1 room score. The spa is on-site, the vibe leans relaxed rather than party-heavy, and the north coast location means moderate sargassum May through October, though the resort manages it. At around $400 a night, it's mid-tier pricing for what amounts to an all-in family solution with built-in help. If the nanny model appeals, the rest tends to work fine.

Ocho Rios

Ultimate Jerk Centre

Ultimate Jerk Centre is a roadside spot in Discovery Bay, right across from Green Grotto Caves on the main route between Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay. It's the kind of place where tour buses pull over and locals eat lunch at the same tables, which tells you what you need to know. The jerk is done over pimento wood in oil-drum smokers out front, and the food rating of 4.3 backs up what your nose figures out from the parking lot. The menu is straightforward: jerk chicken, jerk pork, festival, rice and peas. It's cheap, the value score is high, and portions don't leave room for complaints. Service moves—this isn't a linger-over-coffee setup. If you're driving the north coast and want actual jerk without wandering into the hills, this works. Cash speeds things up.

Runaway Bay

Flavours Beach Bar and Restaurant

Flavours sits right on the beach in Runaway Bay, and you're eating with your feet practically in the sand. It's a local spot where the kitchen does straightforward Caribbean and seafood without charging resort prices — the food rating edges above the overall, which usually means people are forgiving the service quirks because the plate delivers. The atmosphere rating is the highest of the bunch, and that tracks: beachfront tables, cold Red Stripe, waves close enough to hear. Families show up regularly, kids included, which means it's casual in the best sense. Service can be slower when it's busy, but that's the tradeoff for beach dining without a reservation. Come for lunch, order the catch of the day or jerk chicken, and plan to linger. It's cheaper than most spots on this stretch, and the vibe makes up for any rough edges.
