Jamaica Palace Hotel is a 4-star resort in Port Antonio with 100 rooms rated 4.0/5 by 165 TripAdvisor reviewers; typical rates from about $380 a night.

About

Jamaica Palace Hotel perches on a hillside just outside Port Antonio, where the northeast coast trades the usual all-inclusive clusters for something quieter. The 4/5 rating across 165 reviews puts it in solid territory for travelers who don't need resort theater—just working rooms, reasonable service, and the view. The subratings are consistent—cleanliness edges highest at 4.2, value holds at 4.0—which suggests the place delivers what it promises without surprises. Rooms and sleep quality both sit at 3.9, so expect functional rather than flashy. Service matches that at 3.9. Location scores 4.0, likely because it's close enough to Port Antonio's Blue Lagoon and reach-the-falls day trips without sitting in the middle of town noise. If you're using Port Antonio as a base for Portland Parish exploring and you want a bed that works without the beachfront price tag, this handles the job. Just don't expect boutique fuss.

Recent Pulse

What travelers are saying.

Steady

Low confidence

Travelers say Jamaica Palace delivers an unusual experience—an 18th-century European palace aesthetic transplanted into Port Antonio's hills, complete with extensive art collections, a Jamaica-shaped pool, and grounds that feel more like a quiet estate than a typical resort. The staff consistently earns praise for warmth and willingness to help, particularly manager Fred (or Freddy), who multiple guests single out by name for going above and beyond. Rooms are spacious and clean with quirky round beds, though many note dated fixtures, inconsistent AC performance, and minimal in-room amenities like fridges or hair dryers. The complimentary Jamaican breakfast gets consistent approval, but dinner service swings wildly—some call it excellent, others find it overpriced with waits exceeding an hour. This is a base for exploring Portland Parish attractions like Blue Lagoon and Frenchman's Cove (both under 10 minutes away), not a beachfront escape, and the property's grand scale means you might be one of only a handful of guests during quieter periods.

Standing out

Manager Fred/Freddy provides personalized attention, remembering guests across multiple stays and intervening directly when service issues arise
12 mentions
“Fred saw us struggling at breakfast and fixed everything—after that we couldn't have been happier”
Jamaica-shaped pool on the second floor is large, clean, heated naturally by concrete surround, and becomes a talking point for every guest
18 mentions
“You can literally swim from Kingston to Negril in that pool—it's one of the coolest designs I've seen”
Complimentary Jamaican breakfast includes multiple courses with options like plantain porridge, chocolate tea, and fresh Blue Mountain coffee
22 mentions
“Breakfast was the highlight—so many courses you forget you waited half an hour”
Extensive original art and sculpture collection throughout property creates museum-like atmosphere, featuring Ken Spencer Sr. and Jr. works
16 mentions
“Every wall has a painting, every corridor a sculpture—it's like staying inside a gallery”
Grounds are meticulously maintained with tropical foliage, fruit trees, and secluded seating areas despite the property's large scale
19 mentions
“Gardeners keep every corner pristine—you can pick fresh coconuts and breadfruit from the trees”

Watch-outs

Restaurant service routinely takes 60+ minutes for simple dishes like burgers or fish, with understaffed kitchen unable to handle even small orders
11 mentions
“Ordered a snapper fillet and waited over an hour—we were the only table in the dining room”
Rooms lack basic amenities (no fridge, kettle, hairdryer, or bathroom outlets) and suffer from dated fixtures including malfunctioning AC units and missing light bulbs
14 mentions
“No plug in the bathroom for a hairdryer, and we had to share the hotel's one working unit with other guests”
WiFi only functions near front desk, not in rooms or across most of property, making connectivity essentially unusable for guests
8 mentions
“Had to stand in the lobby to get any signal—our rooms might as well have had no internet at all”

Tips from travelers

Request an upper-floor room for better views and away from exterior security lighting that shines all night
Book a taxi through hotel staff to reach Blue Lagoon (5 min) or Frenchman's Cove (10 min)—roads are rough without 4x4
Skip dinner at the restaurant unless you have 90+ minutes to spare; breakfast is reliable but dinner service collapses
Bring USD cash for excursions—hotel doesn't exchange currency and ATMs in Port Antonio are limited

Maybe skip if: Travelers expecting modern resort amenities, fast WiFi throughout, or beachfront access should look elsewhere—this is a quirky hillside estate with art-gallery vibes, not a polished contemporary hotel.

The Resort at Wilks Bay

The Resort at Wilks Bay is on the quiet northeast coast in Port Antonio, where Jamaica still feels unhurried. Perfect 5.0 service rating and near-perfect marks across rooms, sleep quality, and cleanliness tell you what kind of place this is — the staff anticipates, the property is tight, and the execution is consistent. The 4.8 value rating suggests it's priced to match, but the repeat-visitor count in those 456 reviews shows people come back anyway. Port Antonio doesn't get the cruise ship crowds. You're here for the bay, the surrounding jungle, and the rhythm of a town that hasn't been engineered for tourism. The resort capitalizes on that without pretending to be rustic — rooms score 4.9 for a reason. If you want polished service in a part of Jamaica that still moves at its own pace, this is the rare spot that delivers both.

quiet

Trident Castle

Trident Castle is a 13-room boutique property on the north coast in Port Antonio, built to look like a medieval castle perched over the water. The 4.9 rating holds across nearly 300 reviews, with perfect marks for rooms and cleanliness — unusual at any price point, let alone at this scale. It's intimate and quiet, the kind of place where you notice the architecture and the staff remembers your name. Direct beach access means you can swim off the property, though this stretch of the Caribbean coast sees seasonal sargassum between May and October, typically cleared but worth noting if you're visiting in summer. The nightly rate sits around $900, reflecting the five-star category and the fact that you're not sharing the place with hundreds of other guests. Port Antonio itself is low-key compared to the resort strips farther west. If you want casino floors and swim-up bars, this isn't it. If you want a small property with high scores in sleep quality and service, it delivers.

luxury

Goblin Hill Villas at San San

Goblin Hill Villas sits on a hillside above San San Bay in Port Antonio, a 28-villa property that feels more like borrowed real estate than a resort. The location rating is a 4.7 for good reason — it's a short shuttle ride to the beach and close enough to San San's calm bay that you avoid the open-coast sargassum that piles up elsewhere on the northeast shore. Each villa is a standalone unit with a kitchen, which explains the appeal: you're not trapped in the dining plan, and the vibe is quiet rather than programmed. Service scores higher than the rooms themselves, which is the telling detail. This is the kind of place where staff compensate for wear with attention. It's not polished like the north-coast resorts, but it's also not trying to be. Port Antonio moves slower, and Goblin Hill follows suit. If you want animation teams and swim-up bars, stay west. If you want a villa with a view and room to settle in, this works.

Bushbar

Bushbar is tucked into the Geejam Hotel up in the Port Antonio hills, and it's as serious about food as it is about not being a resort dining room. The kitchen runs international with a Caribbean backbone, and the 4.8 food rating across 547 reviews backs that up. The 4.9 atmosphere score is worth noting — open-air, elevated, the kind of spot where the jungle soundtrack competes with the playlist. The price tier is high, but the 4.6 value rating suggests people aren't walking out angry. Service matches the food at 4.8, which is rare enough in Jamaica to call out. This isn't a casual stop; the upscale vibe is intentional, and kids won't be comfortable here. Geejam's famously tied to the music scene, so don't be surprised if the crowd skews creative or if the wine list runs deeper than you'd expect this far east. Port Antonio doesn't overflow with fine dining — Bushbar is one of the few doing it at this level.

Port Antonio

Soldier Camp Bar & Grill

Soldier Camp sits inland from Port Antonio proper, on the road that cuts toward the Blue Mountains. It's the kind of place locals point you to when you ask where they actually eat — casual setup, Caribbean and international plates, and a 4.7 food rating that holds up across nearly 200 reviews. The grill turns out jerk and curry alongside burgers and pasta, so groups with mixed appetites don't argue. Pricing sits squarely mid-range, and the value score matches the food score, which means portions show up honest and the bill doesn't sting. Service runs smooth enough to earn the same 4.7, and the vibe stays relaxed — families fit in fine. It's not on the tourist strip, so you'll need a car or taxi, but that's also why it works. If you're staying in Port Antonio and want a night off from hotel dining without making it precious, this is the move.
