Dunn's River Falls vs Blue Hole: Which Ocho Rios Waterfall Should You Book?
Dunn's River is the famous climb with cruise-ship crowds; Blue Hole is the swimming holes and rope swings with a local guide. Prices, time needed, combos, and who should pick which.
By The One Happy Aruba Team · Updated Sep 30, 2026 · How we know
If you can only do one, do Blue Hole. It is the better swim, the better photo, and the better afternoon, and you will not spend it in a human chain behind three hundred cruise passengers. Do Dunn's River if it is your first Jamaica trip and you want the famous climb on your list, or if you are traveling with kids or grandparents who will not enjoy jumping off ledges into a cold pool. If you have a full day and the stamina, the combo tours from Ocho Rios do both for $142 to $159 and it is a genuinely good day, provided you go to Blue Hole first.
The short version
Dunn's River Falls is the postcard: 600 feet of terraced limestone, water pouring over your feet, a park guide holding one hand and a stranger holding the other. It is touristy, it is crowded, and it is also fun if you stop overthinking it. Blue Hole, which locals call Secret Falls or Island Gully, sits inland from Ocho Rios in a bamboo gully. There is no single climb. Instead you wade through tiered pools, jump off ledges into turquoise water, swing on a rope, and let a local guide talk you into the next ledge up. The crowd thins fast once you leave the coast, and by mid-afternoon you can have pools to yourself.
Both are covered in more depth on our Dunn's River Falls and Blue Hole and river tubing experience pages. This article is about choosing.

Two things jump out. First, the private-driver operators (Joe Cool, Byron's, Rocky's, Liberty) hold perfect 5.0 ratings across more than a thousand reviews each, and they will take you to either waterfall or both. You are paying for a person, not a product. Second, the boat-based Dunn's River tours rate noticeably lower (4.2) than everything else. Reviewers are not unhappy with the falls; they are unhappy with the pacing and the party-boat format. Choose it only if the boat is the point.
One line item most operators leave out of the headline price: the Dunn's River entry fee, around $25, is frequently not included in the tour price. Blue Hole's gate fee runs $25 to $30 and the same caveat applies. Confirm what is covered before you pay a deposit.
What a Dunn's River day actually looks like
You arrive at a car park the size of a stadium lot, walk down through a craft market that will try very hard to sell you a carved fish, and reach the beach at the base of the falls. The climb takes 45 minutes to an hour with a park guide, who will link your group hand-to-hand and pick the route up the rock. Plenty of steps are shallow and easy; a few are waist-deep and slick. Water shoes are mandatory, and the cheap plastic rentals at the entrance slide around on wet rock, so bring your own or buy a strap-on pair before you come.
The single most important variable is timing. On cruise-ship days, usually Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the falls turn into a queue by 10 a.m. If you are staying on the island rather than coming off a ship, the whole experience changes when you arrive at opening or after 2 p.m. Lockers cost extra and the changing rooms are swamped mid-morning, so wear your swimsuit under your clothes and bring a dry bag for your phone. Guides work for tips rather than salary; $5 to $10 per person is normal if they got you to the top, and they will hold your phone for the waterfall photo.
From Ocho Rios the falls are a ten-minute drive, which is why an Ochi base makes the "quick strike" version so cheap ($50 to $100). From Montego Bay it is roughly ninety minutes each way; from Negril you are looking at close to three hours each direction, which is why those tours run seven to eight hours door to door and why a lot of that time is spent watching the coast road go by.
What a Blue Hole day actually looks like
The road in is rough. Expect potholes, a steep final stretch and a small car park with a jerk chicken shack. Then a guide takes your group down into the gully and things get good fast. The pools are a deep blue-green, the first jump is about the height of a diving board, and the guides know every ledge, current and safe landing spot. There is a rope swing, a small cave you can swim into behind a curtain of water, and mud. You will get muddy. You will also climb more than you expect, so the same water-shoe rule applies.
The guides are locals working for tips, not park employees on salary, and cash is expected. Budget for that, for a photo with one of the local jumpers who will do a flip off a ledge you would not consider, and for jerk chicken afterward. The crowd peaks between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.; early morning or after 2 p.m. is when the tour buses clear out. If your trip includes White River tubing, it runs best May through November when water levels cooperate; in dry season the river can get shallow enough to scrape.
One community note that came up more than once: people who went in worried about the cost came out saying it was worth every dollar, and Blue Hole was frequently the one activity they told friends not to skip.
Who each one is wrong for
Dunn's River is wrong for anyone who hates crowds and cannot control their arrival time. If you are on a cruise ship with a 10 a.m. pier departure, you will hit the wall of humanity. It is also a weak choice for strong swimmers who came to Jamaica for water: you are climbing, not swimming.
Blue Hole is wrong for anyone who is not comfortable jumping into water, for young children who cannot yet swim confidently, and for anyone with knees or balance that do not like slick rock and no handrails. Accessibility on the island is limited in general, and Blue Hole has uneven paths and no ramps at all. It is also a long haul from Montego Bay or Negril, three hours of driving each way from the far west, so if it is your priority, stay in Ocho Rios or Runaway Bay rather than commuting.
Is doing both in one day sane?
Yes, from Ocho Rios or Falmouth. Borderline from Montego Bay. No from Negril. The two combo tours in the table, at $142 for seven hours and $159 for eight with a Bamboo Beach lunch, are built for exactly this and their ratings (4.9 and 4.7) suggest people finish the day happy. The order matters: do Blue Hole first while your legs are fresh and the crowd is thin, then Dunn's River in the afternoon after the cruise convoy has gone back to the ships. Several operators run it the other way round to fit the buses. Ask.
If you have two days on the north coast, split them. Blue Hole plus tubing one morning, Dunn's River early the next, and a lazy afternoon in between. That is the version in our starter itinerary.
What to skip
The Dunn's River boat trips are the weakest way to see the falls in the data, so unless you specifically want a catamaran and open bar, book a land tour. The "triple action" style packs that add horseback riding to Blue Hole and tubing are fine value at $157 for five hours, but they move at group pace and you will feel rushed at the water. If the water is what you came for, a Blue Hole-only tour at $110 for four hours gives you twice the pool time. And do not pay anyone at the Dunn's River craft market a "guide fee" before you reach the ticket booth; the official park guides meet you at the base of the falls.
How to book and when
Book a private driver for either waterfall if you are a family or a group of four or more. The per-person price is the same as a scheduled van and you set the clock, which is the only way to beat the 10 a.m. crowd. For couples and solo travelers, the scheduled tours from Ocho Rios are cheaper and fine. Either way, book before you fly rather than at the hotel tour desk, which marks up the same operators, and lean on our things to do hub and the activities browse page for the current listings. If waterfalls are a big part of why you are coming, run the trip planner with "excursions" as your splurge preference and it will weight your resort picks toward the north coast.
