Montego Bay vs Negril vs Ocho Rios: Where to Stay in Jamaica

Montego Bay for the short transfer and big resorts, Negril for Seven Mile Beach and sunsets, Ocho Rios for waterfalls and excursions. Resort counts, ratings, transfer times and who fits where.

By The One Happy Aruba Team · Updated Sep 30, 2026 · How we know

Negril if the beach is the trip. Montego Bay if you want the biggest choice of all-inclusives and a transfer short enough that you are in the pool an hour after landing. Ocho Rios if you plan to leave the resort every other day for waterfalls, rafting and Nine Mile. First-timers who cannot decide should default to Negril for a week or Montego Bay for a long weekend; the Ocho Rios drive only pays off when you actually use the excursions on its doorstep.

The three areas side by side

The resort counts and ratings below come from our database of places to stay; transfer times are from Sangster International (MBJ) in decent traffic. Add 30 to 45 minutes on a shared shuttle that stops at every gate.

The ratings are nearly identical, which tells you the choice is not about quality. It is about what you want to be near.

Montego Bay: the short transfer and the big resorts

Montego Bay is where you land, and its biggest selling point is that you can be checked in before your luggage has finished sweating. The airport shuttle to a MoBay hotel is around $12 per person on the Airport Shuttle from MBJ to your hotel, and the drive to the Rose Hall strip east of town is under 45 minutes even in traffic. That matters more than people admit on a four-night trip.

It is also where the all-inclusive giants cluster. Sixteen of the 49 properties on file are all-inclusive, the highest share of the three. The most-reviewed are Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort & Spa (rating 4.0 across 19,154 reviews, around $350 a night, strong for kids), Secrets Wild Orchid and Secrets St. James (both adults-only, 4.3, around $550), Sandals Jamaica Montego Bay (4.4, around $550) and Sandals Caribbean Cay (4.4, around $900). For families, Sunset Beach Resort, Spa & Waterpark is the budget pick with a 5/5 kid score and the lowest rating of the bunch at 3.8; Iberostar Waves Rose Hall Beach at 4.2 and around $350 is the safer middle.

The beach reality: Montego Bay is a city with beaches, not a beach town. Doctor's Cave Beach is the famous one, lifeguarded, calm and clear, rated 4.2 across 2,423 reviews, with a small entry fee and a crowd score of 4 out of 5. Cornwall Beach next door is quieter. Most resort beaches are small protected coves rather than a long strand, and the Hip Strip is a place you go for a night out, not a place you wander. Community feedback is split: some people love the energy and the jerk from the street vendors, and at least one repeat visitor said the prices and the hustle wore them down and they would only come back to stay inside a resort. That is the honest trade. MoBay is convenient and lively, and it is not tranquil.

Negril: Seven Mile Beach and the cliffs

Negril is the beach. Seven Mile Beach is rated 4.6 across 8,152 reviews, the highest of any beach on the island, and the water is calm and shallow with a gradual slope that makes it easy for weak swimmers and small kids. The trade-off is that it is also the most crowded strand (crowds 4 out of 5) and, as one community answer noted, there are no dedicated beach clubs along it in the Caribbean-island sense; you get resort beach service and beach-bar food instead. Quieter alternatives sit at the north end: Bloody Bay (4.6, calmer crowds) and the small cove at Half Moon Beach between the beach and the cliffs.

The cliffs of the West End are the other half of Negril, where the boutique cliff hotels are, where you swim off ladders into deep clear water, and where the sunset at Rick's Cafe happens every evening whether you like the crowd or not. Negril has the same 49 properties as Montego Bay but only 11 are all-inclusive; the rest are small hotels and guesthouses along the beach road and the cliffs, which is why it works so well for people who do not want the wristband. Community threads name it as a favorite more than any other area, usually in the same breath as the beach.

The most-reviewed resorts: Sandals Negril (4.5, 11,902 reviews, around $550, adults-only) and its family sibling Beaches Negril (4.5, kid score 5/5), Couples Swept Away (4.4) and Couples Negril (4.5, around $400), the two Riu properties at around $350 (Hotel Riu Negril at 3.9 and Riu Palace Tropical Bay at 4.2), the boutique Sunset At The Palms (4.6) and, for a very specific crowd, Hedonism II.

The cost of all this is the transfer. Ninety minutes from MBJ in good traffic, longer on a shared van. The Negril to Montego Bay Airport Transfer is $45 per person and rated 4.2 across 1,495 reviews. If you want the drive gone entirely, a small-plane charter puts you in Negril in about fifteen minutes; one community answer flagged it as the fast option, though it is a splurge.

Ocho Rios: waterfalls and excursions

Ocho Rios is where the island's marquee day trips start. Dunn's River Falls is ten minutes away, Blue Hole twenty, Mystic Mountain and the bobsled just up the hill, Nine Mile an hour inland, and Martha Brae rafting an hour west. If you are the kind of traveler who leaves the resort three times in a week, staying here saves you six to nine hours of van time compared with commuting from Negril. It is also a cruise port, which means the town center and Dunn's River fill up on ship days (usually Tuesday to Thursday) and empty out otherwise.

The resort mix is different. Only six of the 41 properties are all-inclusive, but they include the biggest names: Sandals Ochi (4.3 across 15,663 reviews, around $550), Moon Palace Jamaica (4.4, family-friendly), Hotel Riu Ocho Rios (3.9, around $350, kid score 4/5), and the quieter adults-only trio of Couples Sans Souci (4.6), Sandals Royal Plantation (4.7, around $900) and Sandals Dunn's River (4.8). The top-rated property in the whole database sits here too: Jamaica Inn, a 4.9 across 2,254 reviews, not all-inclusive, around $900 a night, the kind of old-Jamaica hotel where couples come back for their fiftieth anniversary.

The beach reality is the weak point. Ocho Rios beaches are resort beaches. The public Turtle Beach in town is calm but busy with jet skis and glass-bottom boats (crowds 5 out of 5, rating 4.1), and the alternatives like James Bond Beach are a drive. If you stay here, your beach is the one at your hotel. One community member picked Ochi for a return trip specifically for the food, the resort beach and the room service, which is the right reason: you pick Ocho Rios for the resort and the excursions, not for a long public strand.

The second-tier bases

Runaway Bay, 20 minutes west of Ocho Rios, has 14 places to stay, five of them all-inclusive, at a slightly lower average rating (4.44). It is quieter and cheaper, community threads note the food at small local spots costs less here than in the commercial hubs, and you keep Ochi's excursion access. Good for value seekers who do not need a town. See Runaway Bay.

Falmouth, between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, is mostly the cruise pier plus a handful of big resorts (nine properties, four all-inclusive, average 4.39). The draw is a 45-minute airport transfer combined with reasonable access to both Dunn's River and Martha Brae. See Falmouth.

The South Coast is small (23 properties, one all-inclusive) and has the highest average rating on the island at 4.86. Treasure Beach guesthouses, the YS Falls and Black River day, Pelican Bar. It is two hours from the airport and there is nothing to do at night, which is exactly why people who go there love it. See South Coast.

Port Antonio in the far east is lush, rainy, gorgeous and slow: 25 properties, none all-inclusive, Blue Lagoon and Reach Falls at hand, and a three-hour-plus drive from MBJ that rules it out for short trips. See Port Antonio. And Kingston (27 properties, no all-inclusives, average 4.65) is a city trip for music and food, not a beach base.

The decision shortcut

  • Four nights or fewer: Montego Bay. The transfer math wins.
  • A week and the beach is the point: Negril, on the beach for families, on the cliffs for couples.
  • A week and you want to see the island: Ocho Rios, or Runaway Bay to save money.
  • Two weeks: split it. Ochi first for the excursions, then Negril to finish on the beach. That was the sequence a community member recommended, and it is the one in our starter itinerary.
  • Kids under ten: Negril's shallow water or a Montego Bay waterpark resort.
  • Honeymoon or anniversary: Negril cliffs or the adults-only cluster in Ocho Rios.
  • You hate crowds: South Coast or Port Antonio, and accept the drive.

If you want the site to weigh this for you, the trip planner asks about transfer tolerance, beach priority and how often you plan to leave the resort, and scores the areas accordingly. The resort areas hub has every base in one place.
