Jamaica for Families
Jamaica works brilliantly for families with young kids — short transfers from Montego Bay airport to resort towns like Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay mean you're poolside within 90 minutes, and the big all-inclusives in these areas come loaded with waterparks, kids' clubs, and calm reef-protected beaches where toddlers can wade without waves knocking them over. You'll spend most days at your resort (which is the point), with a few easy excursions like Dunn's River Falls, bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae, and maybe Mystic Mountain's bobsled mixed in. The island isn't trying to be Disney — it's tropical, occasionally chaotic, and very real — but the family resorts have this dialed in.
Where to base yourself
The areas that fit.
Ocho Rios
Ocho Rios is family central — 90 minutes from the airport, packed with all-inclusives that have waterparks and kids' clubs, and close to Dunn's River Falls, Mystic Mountain, and the Blue Hole. The resort beaches here are calm and reef-protected, which matters when you've got kids under 10 who want to swim without getting tumbled.
Runaway Bay
Runaway Bay is even closer to the airport than Ocho Rios — about an hour — and quieter, with a handful of solid family all-inclusives and beaches that don't get pounded by waves. You're still close enough to hit Dunn's River or the Luminous Lagoon, but the vibe is more low-key than the Ochi strip.
Montego Bay
Montego Bay gives you the shortest possible transfer — 10 to 30 minutes from MBJ airport — which is huge when you're traveling with toddlers who've been on planes all day. Doctor's Cave Beach is calm and swimmable, and you've got the widest choice of family resorts with waterparks, plus easy access to everything on the north coast.

Dunn's River Falls Tours
The climb everyone does — from Montego Bay, Negril or Ocho Rios, with or without Blue Hole and Mystic Mountain bolted on.
Compare the ways →Mystic Mountain Bobsled & Zipline
The rainforest bobsled, sky explorer and zipline above Ocho Rios — what's included, and how to combine it.
Compare the ways →Bamboo Rafting on the Martha Brae
Thirty-foot bamboo rafts, a captain with a pole, and a very slow river — Martha Brae vs. Rio Grande vs. Lethe.
Compare the ways →Luminous Lagoon Night Tours
Falmouth's glowing water — the bioluminescent boat ride, best conditions, and the moon-phase gotcha.
Compare the ways →Blue Hole & River Tubing in Ocho Rios
Secret Falls, the Blue Hole swimming holes and White River tubing — the Ochi day that locals rate above Dunn's.

Not for this trip.
Negril and Seven Mile Beach as a home base
It's 90 minutes from the airport with young kids in a van, and while the beach is gorgeous, you'll spend half your first and last day just getting there and back. Stay closer to MBJ and do Negril as a day trip if you want the beach, or skip it entirely — your resort beach will be fine for toddlers.
Rick's Café cliff jumping
It's loud, crowded, and built around watching drunk people jump off cliffs — not great with small kids who get bored after 10 minutes. If you want sunset and a vibe, you're better off at your resort's beachfront bar where the kids can run around without you losing sight of them.
Catamaran party cruises
The open-bar catamaran cruises are for adults who want to get hammered and snorkel — not for families with kids under 10. You'll be corralling toddlers on a moving boat while everyone else is three rum punches deep. Skip it and do a private snorkel trip or just snorkel off your resort beach.
Kingston
Kingston is a 3-hour drive from Montego Bay, and unless you're deeply into Bob Marley history or reggae culture, there's nothing here that justifies the day with young kids. The beaches near Kingston aren't resort-quality, and you'll spend more time in the car than doing anything worth remembering.
The money part
Family all-inclusives in Jamaica run $250 to $500 per night depending on the resort and season — winter and spring break spike hard, summer and fall drop by 30% to 40%. The all-inclusive model makes sense with kids because you're not nickel-and-dimed for meals, and the waterparks and kids' clubs are included, but watch the excursion add-ons — Dunn's River Falls tours can run $80 to $120 per adult through the resort, and you'll pay separately for every off-property trip. Transfers from MBJ airport to Ocho Rios or Runaway Bay run $25 to $35 per person for shared shuttles, or $80 to $120 for a private van — worth it if you've got toddlers and car seats. Budget $300 to $500 for excursions if you're doing two or three trips beyond the resort, and bring cash for tipping — drivers, raft captains, and tour guides expect it.
Before you book
- Book your airport transfer in advance — don't wait until you land at MBJ with tired kids and luggage, because the taxi hustlers at the airport will charge you double what a pre-booked shuttle costs.
- Request a ground-floor room or one close to the pool and kids' club when you check in — it saves you elevator waits and makes it easier to get back to the room for naps or forgotten sunscreen.
- Pack reef-safe sunscreen and plan to reapply it constantly — the Jamaican sun is stronger than you think, and kids burn fast even when they're just playing in shallow water.
- Time Dunn's River Falls for early morning or late afternoon if you can — midday is when the cruise ship groups flood in, and the climb turns into a conga line with a two-year-old losing patience halfway up.
- Bring water shoes for everyone — the rocks at Dunn's River are slippery, and most beaches have sea urchins or sharp coral bits in the shallows that will ruin a toddler's day instantly.
- Check the moon phase before booking the Luminous Lagoon — a full moon washes out the glow, and you'll wonder why you drove 40 minutes to see dim water. New moon or just after is when the bioluminescence actually shows up.
- Don't over-schedule — the best days with young kids in Jamaica are the ones where you do the waterpark in the morning, hit the beach for an hour, nap, then come back for the pool and dinner. You're not on a sightseeing mission; you're here to let the kids run around in warm water while you drink a Red Stripe.
