Jamaica by month
Jamaica in May
Jamaica in May: 87°F highs, 74°F nights, brief, warm afternoon showers a few times a week · may sits in the shoulder season — the spring-break families are gone, the all-inclusives drop their rates, and the beach-chair fight at doctor's cave is over. Crowds, hotel prices, when to book, and what's worth doing.
May is Jamaica's sweet-spot month: the dry season has just ended, so you trade a bit of afternoon humidity and the occasional warm shower for genuinely lower prices and thinner crowds on the beaches. The island is still lush and green, water temps hover around 82°F, and you're booking right before hurricane season opens June 1 — so May is the last worry-free shoulder window. If you can handle a 20-minute shower over your Red Stripe, you'll have Seven Mile Beach nearly to yourself and pay 20–30% less than April.

Temperature
87°F highs, 74°F nights — hot, but the sea breeze still works and mornings are gorgeous
Wind
Trade winds ease up as the wet season begins; humidity climbs noticeably by mid-month, especially inland
Rain
Brief, warm afternoon showers a few times a week — the kind that cool things off for an hour, not the kind that ruin your day
Crowds & prices
May sits in the shoulder season — the spring-break families are gone, the all-inclusives drop their rates, and the beach-chair fight at Doctor's Cave is over. You'll find mid-range pricing ($$) and genuinely open restaurants without reservations in Negril and Montego Bay. It's one of the best value months: you're paying less but the weather is still mostly cooperative, and the only trade-off is occasional afternoon clouds and that sticky feeling by 3 p.m.
When to book
Book flights and hotels 6–10 weeks out for May. You're past the high-season crush, so there's inventory, but waiting until the last minute won't unlock deals — May is popular with savvy travelers who know it's the last pre-hurricane bargain window.
Our getting-there guide covers flights to Jamaica plus a cheapest-fare-by-month table to sanity-check May flight prices.
What to do
What May is made for.
On the calendar
- Calabash Literary Festival (late May, biennial, Treasure Beach)
- Labour Day (May 23, local holiday)
Pack for May
- Lightweight rain jacket or packable poncho for the afternoon showers
- Serious sunscreen — May sun is fierce and the humidity makes it feel hotter
- Moisture-wicking shirts; cotton will stay damp all day
- Sandals that can get wet and dry fast
- Hat with a brim for midday beach hours
- Reef-safe sunscreen if you're snorkeling the Montego Bay Marine Park
Know before you go
- May showers usually hit between 2–5 p.m., so plan excursions for the morning and save late afternoon for a pool bar with a roof
- This is the last month before hurricane season starts June 1 — if you're risk-averse, May beats June through November
- All-inclusive rates drop noticeably after Easter; compare May pricing to late April and you'll see the shoulder discount kick in
- Negril's Seven Mile Beach faces west, so even if it rains in the afternoon, sunset often breaks through the clouds by 6:30 p.m.
- If Calabash is happening (it's biennial), book Treasure Beach lodging early — the festival is small but draws a dedicated crowd
- Humidity makes the Blue Mountains feel sticky; if you're doing a coffee tour or hiking, start at sunrise
- Doctor's Cave Beach and the Hip Strip in Montego Bay are noticeably quieter than March/April — you'll actually enjoy them in May
