Where to Stay in Jamaica: Montego Bay vs Negril vs Ocho Rios

One airport, three very different resort coasts. How Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, and the quieter Runaway Bay and Port Antonio actually differ — and which one matches your trip.

By The One Happy Aruba Team · Updated Sep 30, 2026 · How we know

Jamaica's resort coast breaks into three main zones, each served by Montego Bay's airport but utterly different in vibe, beach style, and what you'll do. Montego Bay is closest to the airport, biggest, most developed. Negril lies 90 minutes west, famous for Seven Mile Beach and cliffs. Ocho Rios sits two hours east, the excursion capital — Dunn's River, Blue Hole, rainforest zip-lines. Choose wrong and you'll spend the week wishing you'd read this first.

The 60-Second Map

Montego Bay is Jamaica's second city and the hub most first-timers land. Transfer from the airport: 10–30 minutes depending on your resort. Doctor's Cave Beach, Hip Strip, the largest concentration of all-inclusives. If you want resort infrastructure, nearby golf, and the shortest ride from the plane, MoBay delivers. Our database counts 35 properties here, average rating 4.66, eight all-inclusives including Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort & Spa and the adults-only Sandals Jamaica Montego Bay. It's urban-adjacent, not sleepy.

Negril is 90 minutes west, the opposite of Montego Bay's hustle. Seven Mile Beach stretches calm and flat, perfect for lazy swimmers and sunset seekers. The West End cliffs add drama — tiny coves, cliff-jumping at Rick's Café. Negril skews laid-back, bohemian at the edges, with more adults-only resorts (six of our 26 listings) than anywhere else. Think Couples Swept Away, Sandals Negril, and the famously libertine Hedonism II. Average rating across Negril properties: 4.42. The drive matters — budget two hours if traffic's thick.

Ocho Rios sits two hours east, the cruise-port town famous for waterfalls and jungle tours. You're here because you want Dunn's River Falls, Blue Hole, Mystic Mountain's bobsled. The beach is narrower, rockier in spots, but the excursion infrastructure is unmatched. Our 28 Ocho Rios properties average 4.84 stars; the adults-only Jamaica Inn Hotel earns 4.9 from over 2,200 reviews, while the all-inclusive Hotel Riu Ocho Rios pulls families at around $350/night. Several travelers in the community specifically return to Ocho Rios for the food, beach quality, and easy access to waterfalls.

Runaway Bay is the quiet middle ground between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios — 45 minutes from the airport, nine properties averaging 4.59 stars. Less commercialized, cheaper meals at local spots, a slower pace. Bahia Principe Explore Jamaica dominates the reviews (15,740 of them) at around $350/night. If you want all-inclusive value without the Montego Bay crowds, Runaway Bay earns consideration.

Port Antonio on the northeast coast is lush, uncrowded, boutique. Eleven properties, 4.89 average rating, zero all-inclusives. You fly into Kingston (KIN) or endure a three-hour drive from Montego Bay. Frenchman's Cove, the Blue Lagoon, rainforest hikes — this is the Jamaica most visitors skip. For a long stay exploring Portland's waterfalls and mountains, it's heaven. For a quick all-inclusive week, it's the wrong call.

South Coast (Treasure Beach, Whitehouse) is even more off-script: 21 properties, 4.92 average rating, practically zero tourist infrastructure. Sandals Jamaica South Coast is the lone major resort, a 4.5-star adults-only property at $550/night. The rest are guesthouses, villas, and small inns. You come here to disappear, not to tick off a tour checklist.

Montego Bay: Biggest, Closest, Most Built-Up

Transfer: 10–30 minutes from Sangster International (MBJ).

Who it's for: First-timers who want maximum resort choice, families who value a short airport transfer, golfers (Rose Hall, Half Moon, White Witch courses), anyone who wants urban energy within reach. Montego Bay offers 35 places to stay, the deepest roster of all-inclusives, and the easiest logistics. You'll find mega-resorts like Grand Palladium (19,154 reviews, $350/night, kid score 5/5) and Sunset Beach Resort, Spa & Waterpark (7,931 reviews, waterslides, $350/night), plus high-end escapes like Half Moon (4.7 stars, $900/night) and Round Hill (4.8 stars, $900/night, old-school elegance). Adults-only options include three Sandals properties, the best-reviewed being Sandals Caribbean Cay (4.4 stars, $900/night).

The beach: Doctor's Cave is the postcard — clear, calm, white sand, crowded. Hip Strip (Gloucester Avenue) runs parallel, lined with bars, jerk stands, souvenir shops, and hustlers. If you want a classic Jamaican beach day, you'll get it. If you want solitude, you won't. One community member warns that prices skew high in MoBay and customer service can disappoint outside the big resorts, though local vendors and hotel staff often shine.

Who'll hate it: Anyone allergic to crowds, cruise-ship energy, or urban adjacency. Montego Bay is a working city, not a postcard village. If you want boutique calm, look to Ocho Rios's north coast estates or Port Antonio's jungle hideaways.

Day-trip access: Close to Dunn's River Falls (90 min), Luminous Lagoon (30 min east in Falmouth), Martha Brae rafting, and easy airport transfers back to MBJ. Rose Hall Great House, the Hip Strip's nightlife, and Doctor's Cave Beach are all within minutes. One traveler recommends a jet-ski outing in the morning to dodge afternoon rain.

Negril: Seven Mile Beach, Cliffs, Sunsets

Transfer: 90 minutes west of MBJ, sometimes two hours in heavy traffic.

Who it's for: Beach purists, sunset worshippers, honeymooners, adults seeking bohemian calm. Negril's Seven Mile Beach is Jamaica's longest unbroken stretch of sand — shallow, warm, nearly waveless. The West End cliffs add an entirely different vibe: boutique hotels perched above the sea, cliff-jumping, intimate coves. Negril skews adults-only (six of 26 properties), with the community repeatedly naming Seven Mile Beach as a personal favorite. Sandals Negril (4.5 stars, 11,902 reviews, $550/night) and Couples Negril (4.5 stars, $400/night) anchor the adults-only market. Families can choose Hotel Riu Negril (3.9 stars, $350/night, kid score 3/5) or Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay (4.2 stars, $350/night, kid score 4/5).

The vibe: Slower, less frantic than Montego Bay. Rick's Café draws crowds at sunset for cliff-jumping and Red Stripe, but much of Negril still feels like a beach town, not a resort machine. The cliffs hide gems like Samsara Cliffs Resort (3.8 stars, $400/night) and Negril Tree House Resort (4.5 stars, $350/night), perched above turquoise water with ladders straight into the sea.

Who'll hate it: Anyone who wants waterfalls, rainforest hikes, or heavy excursion infrastructure. Negril is about the beach, the cliffs, and sunset cocktails. Dunn's River and Blue Hole are two-hour drives. One community report mentions illness after roadside jerk chicken in Negril — standard travel-gut caution applies.

Day-trip access: Rick's Café cliffs, Negril Seven Mile Beach, catamaran sunset cruises, ATV and zipline tours (though these often route inland toward Montego Bay). For waterfalls, expect long drives or pre-booked group tours. A local operator lists safari tours, horseback riding, and ziplines as Negril-area options, though many launch from outside town.

Ocho Rios: Waterfalls, Tours, Cruise Port

Transfer: ~2 hours east of MBJ, occasionally faster on the new North Coast Highway.

Who it's for: Active travelers, waterfall chasers, first-timers who want to see Jamaica's greatest hits in one week. Ocho Rios is the excursion capital: Dunn's River Falls (the climb everyone Instagrams), Blue Hole (rope-swing heaven), Mystic Mountain bobsled, and easy access to Blue Mountains coffee tours. The beach itself is narrower and rockier than Negril or Montego Bay, but the 28 properties here average 4.84 stars — the highest of any major resort zone. Jamaica Inn Hotel (4.9 stars, $900/night, adults-only) is the north coast's most celebrated boutique, while Hotel Riu Ocho Rios (3.9 stars, 14,128 reviews, $350/night) anchors the all-inclusive market.

Cruise ships dock here weekly, which means daytime crowds at Dunn's River but also solid restaurant and tour infrastructure. Several travelers specifically chose Ocho Rios for a return trip, citing food quality, beach access, and easy excursion logistics. One suggests a helicopter tour over Dunn's River for a low-altitude perspective of the falls and coast.

Who'll hate it: Beach perfectionists who demand Seven Mile sand. Ocho Rios's shoreline is serviceable but not the postcard. If you want lazy days on a wide, waveless beach, Negril wins. If you want to climb waterfalls, raft rivers, and zip through the canopy, Ocho Rios is unbeatable.

Day-trip access: Everything. Dunn's River, Blue Hole, Mystic Mountain, Blue Mountains, Bob Marley's Nine Mile, and easy reach to Montego Bay or Port Antonio. One traveler recommends saving Negril for the final leg of a trip, routing Ocho Rios → Montego Bay → Negril west.

Runaway Bay: The Quiet Value Play

Transfer: 45 minutes east of MBJ, halfway to Ocho Rios.

Who it's for: Budget-conscious families, couples who want all-inclusive calm without Montego Bay's hustle. Runaway Bay's nine properties average 4.59 stars; the two all-inclusives — Bahia Principe Explore Jamaica (3.7 stars, 15,740 reviews, $350/night) and Grand Muthu Runaway Bay (3.9 stars, $400/night) — deliver solid value. Less commercialized than MoBay, cheaper local food at smaller establishments, though one community member notes that full-service bars still price high compared to North America.

The beach: Narrower than Negril, quieter than Montego Bay. Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay share a coastline with fewer crowds and easy access to Green Grotto Caves. You're 30–40 minutes from Dunn's River and an hour from Montego Bay's Hip Strip.

Who'll hate it: Anyone seeking nightlife, extensive restaurant variety, or the deepest resort amenity roster. Runaway Bay is intentionally low-key.

Port Antonio & South Coast: Off the Beaten Path

Port Antonio (northeast) and South Coast (southwest) are for travelers who've already done the classics or who prioritize solitude over convenience. Port Antonio's 11 properties average 4.89 stars, zero all-inclusives, and require a three-hour drive from MBJ or a separate flight into Kingston (KIN). Frenchman's Cove, Blue Lagoon, Reach Falls — this is rainforest Jamaica, lush and undeveloped. The community recommends Portland and Ocho Rios for long stays with varied accommodation, though suitability depends on what kind of experience you want.

South Coast (Treasure Beach, Whitehouse) averages 4.92 stars across 21 properties, anchored by Sandals Jamaica South Coast (4.5 stars, $550/night, adults-only). The rest are guesthouses and small inns. You'll see the Jamaica most visitors miss — fishing villages, empty beaches, zero tour-bus traffic. But you'll also drive two hours to anything major. This is the choice for repeat visitors or anyone allergic to tourist infrastructure.

All-Inclusive vs. Not: The Quick Reality Check

Jamaica's all-inclusive game is strong — 21 of the named resorts in this article include the tag. For first-timers, families, or anyone who wants zero logistical friction, they deliver. Meals, drinks, non-motorized water sports, often airport transfers bundled. The downside: you're captive. Stepping off-property for jerk chicken or a local rum bar means paying twice.

If you skip the all-inclusive, you'll eat better (local spots, jerk centers, roadside breadfruit with oxtails), but you'll navigate transport, menus, and pricing. Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Negril all support independent travelers with taxis, route taxis, and tour operators. Port Antonio and South Coast require more DIY planning. See our getting around guide for route-taxi reality and whether to rent a car.

No single choice is wrong. Montego Bay delivers convenience and variety. Negril delivers the beach and sunsets Jamaica's famous for. Ocho Rios delivers waterfalls and rainforest adventures. Runaway Bay delivers value. Port Antonio and South Coast deliver the Jamaica hardly anyone sees. Match your priorities to the map, book the transfer, and go.
